Rust-Free Lockers for RV Campgrounds & Outdoor Parks — Rain, Mud, It’s Fine
Why RV Parks Are Switching From Steel Lockers
A campground and a surf club have different problems. Salt air isn’t the main enemy here. Mud and rain are.
The shower area, changing room, and common zone in an RV park stay wet most of the time. Guests come back from the trail with mud on their shoes, walk straight into the changing room, and hit the lockers. Steel cabinets can’t take that. The paint gets scratched off by grit and sand. Once the coating breaks, rust crawls in from the scratch. In six months the cabinet base starts showing color. In a year, doors won’t close properly.
ABS lockers don’t have this issue. Not “treated to be rust-resistant for now” — the material simply doesn’t rust. Mud splashes on it. Dries up. You hose it off. It’s the same surface it was before. A steel cabinet with chipped paint can’t go back to the factory for a respray every time it gets scratched.
We installed 120 ABS units at a coastal campground in Australia last year. After the rainy season, the facility manager messaged: “First year we didn’t have to go through every unit checking for rust.”

What Kind of Campground Is This Locker For
RV Parks
One RV spot parks one vehicle, but a family of four needs storage for at least two bags, hiking shoes, toiletries, and kids’ stuff. The 19.7″ depth fits all of that without forcing things in. The 15.4″ half-height lets you stack two rows — same footprint, double the storage. Most RV parks have covered walkways or awning structures, so semi-outdoor installation works fine.
Campgrounds & Glamping Sites
Campers carry tents and sleeping bags. The locker’s job is to keep the stuff dry that can’t get wet — phone, wallet, medicine, fresh clothes. ABS has good door sealing. Humidity outside doesn’t get inside. For glamping, guests expect better. Multi-color door options match the site’s aesthetic, unlike the gray-white of steel cabinets.
Seasonal Public Bathing Areas
Open for three months in summer, closed the rest of the year. Steel lockers rust worse during the shutdown — no ventilation, condensation builds up inside. ABS lockers don’t have that problem. When the season ends, pull them down and store them. Next year they’re the same.

ABS vs Steel Lockers for Outdoor Environments
| Area | ABS Locker | Steel Locker |
|---|---|---|
| Mud and grit | Surface won’t rust if scratched | Paint chips, bare metal exposed, rust starts |
| Condensation | ABS doesn’t absorb moisture | Temperature swing creates condensation inside |
| Rain exposure | Hose it off. Done. | Must be dried or rust accelerates |
| Seasonal storage | Store indoors, stays the same | Rusts in storage, may need replacement next season |
| Maintenance | None needed | Regular rust removal, repainting, hinge replacement |
| Service life | 5-8 years (semi-covered outdoor) | 1-3 years (depends on maintenance) |
| Installation | Modular assembly, no welding | Usually requires floor anchors |

Design Details That Matter for Campgrounds
3″ Raised Base
Lockers don’t sit on the ground. Campground floors collect dirt, leaves, and standing water. A raised base keeps debris from piling up at the bottom. This detail matters more here than indoors — outdoor floors are rarely dry.
Half-Height Stacking
15.4″ per unit means two stacked rows are only 30.8″ total. Most adults can reach the top row without a step stool. Campground shower and changing areas are usually tight. Two rows double the capacity without expanding the room.
Smooth Surface
Dirty lockers are a constant headache at campgrounds. Muddy handprints, spilled drinks, kids drawing on the doors. ABS wipes clean with a wet rag. No special cleaner needed. Scratched steel paint traps dirt in the grooves and won’t come clean.
Impact Resistance
Campground use is moderate, but kids run around. ABS absorbs bumps. Steel cabinets dent — once dented, they don’t get fixed. You replace them.

Where These Lockers Get Used
Shower & Changing Rooms
Guests come out of the shower and need somewhere dry for clean clothes and a towel. 19.7″ depth works. Interior stays dry.
Glamping Accommodation
Glamping guests notice fit and finish. Colored doors match the site design. Steel isn’t an option when the room rate is $200+ a night.
Staff Storage
Staff lockers don’t need to be premium, but they need to be trouble-free. ABS’s low-maintenance nature fits perfectly — staff areas aren’t worth managing heavily.
Event Overflow Storage
Some campgrounds host music festivals, markets, or outdoor movie nights during peak season. They need temporary extra storage. Modular ABS units go up before the event and come down after. Steel cabinets can’t do that flexibly.

FAQ
Q: Can ABS lockers handle direct sunlight?
Install under a covered awning or roof. Long-term direct UV exposure reduces ABS lifespan. Semi-outdoor with overhead cover is fine.
Q: What about theft at a campground?
Standard key lock per door. Upgrade to combo or RFID for higher security. Bottom mounting holes allow bolting to the floor or wall.
Q: Can they go on sandy ground?
Yes. The 3″ base lifts the cabinet above the sand. A small concrete pad underneath prevents sinking or tilting over time.
Q: Will freezing temperatures crack them?
ABS stays flexible below freezing. For extreme cold (under -4°F / -20°C), add insulation or place in a sheltered area. For seasonal closures, storing indoors over winter is safest.
Q: Is installation difficult?
No. Modular design. No welding, no heavy tools. Connector pieces between cabinets. Floor anchors at the base. Two people can install 30 units in an afternoon.
